Pizza analogy doesn't cut it
Robert Pierce wants to promote his vision of a local community recreation center by saying "It will cost less than an $8 pizza each month. That may or may not be true. If the taxes on a home and property valued at $371,000 are already $4471 plus. That's 533 $8 pizzas each year. How many pizzas are we supposed to give up in the name of taxes?

Misinformation abounds in recreation center debate
A tremendous amount of inaccurate information is being circulated regarding the proposed recreation center. This is mostly due to the lack of availability of the details regarding the facility. The signature drive was so overwhelming, and the success so swift, that the details were not ready. They are now available on the Web (www.sandpointcenter.com) and at the library. Here are the top three questions (other questions are addressed in the plan) which need clarification:
Center's 'small' price is food on table for some
I wrote a letter a while back but by the time I got around to taking it to the paper, a lot of other people had already said what I was going to say, and that is we don't need a recreation district. If some want it so bad let them pay for it, not the taxpayers. My taxes are high enough already.

Because of that fact, I thought I would share with you several way to make the care of that special item a lot easier.

Tax-supported luxuries don't deserve support
The current imbroglio over creation of the proposed recreation district is an excellent example of what can happen if you don't pay attention. It seemed like a good idea to build a safe place where children could gather to enjoy the things they do, so I willingly signed the petition to get it on the ballot.

Tax increase is small price to pay for a brighter future
What price do we put on the future of our children? There are people in the community planning a supervised community sports complex; its motto is "strong kids, strong families, strong community."
Taxpayers don't need to pay any more taxes
Like many other residents here, we have seen our property taxes nearly triple in the last few years. What the Sandpoint Centre Corporation is proposing will create another new tax entity with no end in sight. As long as the assessments go up, and I don't see that ending any time soon, the amount of that new tax put on the property owners also goes up.

Taxpayers shouldn't fund private businesses
We are seeing a disturbing trend lately in this country relative to what is truly public or private. A great move is on to push a recreation center down the throats of the taxpayers of Bonner County. They want a private business to be funded/supported by taxpayer dollars.
Rec center is a want, not a need
The Sandpoint Centre Corporation has proposed building an indoor swimming pool, a water park, meeting rooms and an ice skating arena. Why?
County offers plenty to do without building rec center
I am a Bonner County property owner, I am also a single mother of eight children, five of whom still live at home. It has been with dismay that I have read in the paper of a group that is trying to form a recreation center at the taxpayers' expense. Every year I struggle to make ends meet; my expenses go up and my income usually goes down, I want to beg the community to take in account people like me who can't afford to fund the wants and pleasures of a few adults who are saying this is for the kids!

Solution to high costs is living within your means
Recently, some teachers and the Idaho Education Association have complained that teachers are not being paid a livable wage. One teacher told me that his wife only made $58,000 here and could earn over $70,000 elsewhere.

Month highlights healthy start for world's children
A child is the greatest gift any of us are ever likely to receive. Most of us would do anything in our power to ensure health for our baby and a safe, full-term delivery.
After-fire cleanup can pose many challenges, concerns
One of the most challenging things a family can go through is an after-fire cleanup. After the fire is out and a family enters their home for the first time, it seems hopeless because everything is covered with a deep layer of soot and remaining floors and carpets are saturated with water and soot. To the family, it looks like a total loss.
A little Texas crow
Having written not one, but two columns suggesting that the national writers voting Texas ahead of USC in the polls all year were biased fools, it's high time I paid the piper and gave the Longhorns their due propers as National Champs.

Has political correctness run amok in America?
Has political correctness run amok? Instead of "merry Christmas," we hear "happy holidays" lest we offend someone. Rather that "Christmas tree." We now have "holiday trees." We are taking the significance out of the celebration of Christ's birth. We talk about tolerance and diversity but it seems to apply only to a vocal few.

Show compassion and tell pet owners of accidents
On Tuesday, Dec. 27, one of our beloved family pets came up missing. This was not unusual. "Roscoe" (Jack Russell terrier) had been nicknamed "Houdini, because no matter what we tried he managed to get out several times. I've spent a lot of time these past two years searching for my little dog. Quite often he ended up at the animal shelter and they would call us to come get him. A few times he got to share a bed overnight with some children, he was so friendly. He just liked to roam and check out the neighborhood. He was never very far from home when he would be picked up by us or a kind citizen who made sure he was either brought home or taken to PAS safely.

Voters shouldn't take plunge on rec center
Of all the boondoggles to come down the Bonner County pike, an outfit called the Sandpoint Centre Corporation is now proposing a sports complex so "our kids will have something to do."
Country's teachers have an important job to do
This is an open letter to the children and parents of Sandpoint. For the past two months I have been substituting at the middle school and high school in Sandpoint. First, let me say that the kids around here are great kids. These are excellent schools. Still, I hear the same comments from kids that I have heard from the early seventies: "Why do I have to learn this? I'll never need to know that."
