Turn off TV and take a stand against herbicides

The excellent guest opinion (July 9, 2006) "Pristine lake has been hijacked by chemical prostitutes" by Leonard G. Horowitz, resonates in my mind. Thank you, sir, for taking a stand. "Silence is Golden"

As a native of North Idaho I know all to well the beauty that attracts people here from all over the country. I can accept the continued growth and constant building. However, the one thing I cannot tolerate is the rude behavior demonstrated by "macho" truck drivers who continue to use their jake-brakes unnecessarily. They need to remember that people live where they work.

This is a story of a house that today is just a memory. It was located at 410 Railroad Avenue in Sandpoint, Idaho. It proudly stood overlooking Lake Pend d'Oreille when Sandpoint was just a village on the railroad side of Sand Creek. From its porch, it had seen numerous Indians on the point, playing the stick game, swimming, and holding their pow-wows.

Summer is here and fleas are invading our homes. One set of fleas can generate about 50,000 fleas in just one month. There are a variety of chemicals on the market that will eliminate fleas. Science backs up county's use of herbicides in lake

According to an article in the Daily Bee (July 9, 2006), opponents of the use of herbicides to suppress milfoil in the area's waterways are now turning to prayer vigils to "positively effect" (the) water." That recent study, involving 1,800 heart bypass surgery patients, failed to find any beneficial effect whatsoever. In fact, one group of patients who were prayed for had more complications than those who were not. (See

Chemical use foes failed to make case

I feel much better about the chemicals placed in our lake now that we've heard from Leonard G. Horowitz. If this is the best shot opponents of chemical use can take, we're safe from harm. They've been telling us of other approaches that are cheaper, safer and just as effective, but I've not seen a scientifically-based, rationally-reasoned example that would apply to our situation. With all his credentials I thought Horowitz was sure to provide it. Instead, he provided 15 column inches of hyperventilated name-calling and accusations of criminal fraud.

We've all heard the happy talk from the Idaho Transportation Department that they are again just months away from beginning construction on the "Highway in Sand Creek" or the byway. ITD seems to presume that the required Army Corps of Engineers fill permit is a done deal — nothing could be further from the truth.

God's Country

"God's Country" has been hijacked by petro-chemical prostitutes. Here in Sandpoint, famed for its pristine Lake Pend Oreille, Eric Anderson (AKA "Morty Milfoil") seeks reelection for stewarding citizens along party lines laid by Gov. Dirk Kempthorne — the Bush-appointed director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Interior Department. Proud prostitutes for a cadre of chemical company campaign contributors Anderson and friends say the only way to attack aquatic milfoil is to dump 200,000 pounds of Dow Chemical's 2,4-D (a relative of Agent Orange), and the equivalent of the toxic liquid herbicide, Sonar, into waterways that flow to Canada, Washington state, and the Columbia River.

Chemical-free environment safest for children, lake

We need to raise our standards of living by re-creating a chemical-free environment. It's so unfortunate we have learned to live with standards like what is the least amount of harmful toxins or substances versus eradicating all toxic substances! Why use any chemicals in our lake? What about the run off of chemical pesticides and fertilizers from the local golf courses? How is this impairing the health of our lake and contributing to the milfoil bloom? Chemicals are just temporary solutions — Band-Aids with big side affects.

Big city politics, herbicide will only ruin the lake

Lake Pend Oreille belongs to all. It moderates our climate and provides vistas and recreation. But haven't we forgotten something? Before we came here, it was the home of animals and plants that grew there naturally. Some of them are still there in spite of all our activities in and around the lake. What is "ecology?" Isn't it an interaction of all life? When we go to drastic measures with herbicide, we are killing and maiming a lot more than milfoil? Maybe even contributing to the demise of future generations of all of us. Don't we all share half of the genes of our cell chemistry with the milfoil?

Full disclosure is in everybody's best interest

As residents of Bonner County we enjoy the luxury of choice in many of the decisions we make every day. We have an array of options from where and what we eat what we listen to, what we read, whom we associate with and where we do all of this. But we have no choice at all when it comes to choosing who provides us with emergency (police, fire and paramedic) services. The providers of these vital services have a monopoly and we take who we get in our time of dire need.
