Page Hospital served Sandpoint for many years
I was walking by the old Page House not long ago. I stopped, and as I looked at the house that Dr. Ones F. Page had built; I wondered about the man, and what the hospitals were like during his time. I would like to share with you some of the things that transpired, many years ago.

Response to Chuck Spiller's letter from April 20, 2005:
Marriage amendment is not discriminatory
For centuries now, in every civilized culture, marriage as the union of one man and one woman has been the building block of society. But it may not be true in America for long — unless Congress approves the Marriage Protection Amendment.

Memorial Field fundraiser is a simply 'grand' achievement
How amazing.
Let's remove signs as soon as possible
Now that the election is over maybe the politicos and sponsors of other issues will remove all of those ugly signs plastered everywhere you look or are we going to have those swell looking signs up for another month or so? Does anyone ever read those signs? The only one I ever read is held by someone in front of the courthouse criticizing a detective. What does that mean? Who is this guy and who, pray tell, is that detective and why is he so bad? If all of our local business owners decided to put up small ugly paper signs about their businesses all over town, I wonder how long it would be before our city officials would start issuing citations along with substantial fines for off premises signs?
Reflective paint would ease traffic problems
There is a major effort to solve our traffic accident problems on Highway 95 and Highway 2 by spending massive amounts of money to correct the "design defects." I have noticed that the highway department doesn't use reflective line striping paint like most states do. This inexpensive change would allow people to see which lane they are in and where the edge of the road is when the roads have been sanded or wet. All the spending in the world will not stop people who drive when they shouldn't but for those who can't see well. The reflective paint will help a lot and will not destroy our budget.

Talk provided insight, help for anti-gang work
I want to thank The Daily Bee for its wonderful publicity on the recent visit by the Rev. Greg Boyle, Sergio and Erin from the Boyle Heights district in East Los Angeles. Their presentations around gang life were both sobering and inspiring. It confirmed my belief that if youth have meaning and hope in life, they will take themselves off the streets. Our churches raised more than $5,200 for their work in Los Angeles.

Jail's phone policy adds injustice and humiliation
People of Bonner County should be aware that a person who is arrested and taken to the Bonner County correctional facility will probably not be able to contact a family member or a lawyer of his or her own choosing. It seems our sheriff has chosen to contract with a telephone company that refuses to process collect calls to Verizon customers.

Phillips, Dye will deliver results, not problems
The upcoming election reminds me of the adage "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me." Voters, don't be fooled again. The Spokesman-Review said Bud Mueller had "one of the worst political track records … in North Idaho." The Idaho Supreme Court said Mueller "violated due process rights" causing the county to lose the case.
Phillips has skills needed to move county forward
There is so much negative comment regarding Bonner County Commissioner Marcia Phillips that I feel it is appropriate to make positive comments. I have known the Phillips family for more than 25 years and have never questioned their sincerity or their conviction to do what is right.

Values are the choice of individual, not community
The April 11 letter claims that the Gay Straight Alliance does not belong in schools because it's "making kids aware of, and approving of practices they are not ready to make decisions on." In other words, it makes them aware of sex and homosexuality. I was in high school only three years ago and I can guarantee you these are things highschoolers are aware of and making decisions on, clubs or no.
