SHS falls to Lake City in tennis

SANDPOINT — Despite falling 8-4 to Lake City Thursday at Travers park, Sandpoint coach Jane Rockwell loved how her team played, a testament to the best team Lake City has ever had.

"Even though we lost, hands down, 90 percent of our kids played better than I've seen them play all year," Rockwell said. "I always like playing Lake City, they seem a lot like us, real down to earth."

Byron Gray, who continues to shred through the Inland Empire League undefeated, beat Del Armstrong in a well played match at No. 1 boys singles, and Cody Helander rebounded from a loss the day before to drop Emily Plank in straight sets at No. 1 girls singles.

The most tightly contested match of the day was at No. 2 boys singles, where a stark contrast in styles led to some entertaining points. Patrick Orton was able to dictate the pace of play and use consistency and hustle to outlast the more powerful strokes of Tim Wanless, winning in three sets.

Sandpoint will be playing in the Inland Empire Tournament in Spokane today and Saturday.
