District grateful for community's support
It is with gratitude that I write this letter of appreciation on behalf of the Lake Pend Oreille School District. As you know, we just recently passed our supplemental levy election with 58 percent of our voters supporting the levy. We are thankful and appreciative of the fact that this community consistently supports quality education for our students, even in challenging economic times. We will do what it takes to continue to inspire confidence in our stakeholders by careful reflection of practice and the impact of our practice on student learning.
Liberals only have our best interests in mind
I have an important question: Why are liberals, progressives and left-wingers a lot smarter than the rest of us? They seem to know what’s best for everyone. I.e., what cars we should drive, what media we should watch or read, what food is best for us to eat or drink, what we need to defend ourselves with, what to teach our kids, what to use and not to use to warm our homes, power our cars, and where or what to build on our own land.

Area should be made a 'no-damage' zone
Without the hard work from past Montanans to protect our best protected ground, we would be “The Big Nothing.” All that good work deserves respect. Reasons are not good enough to destroy the Cabinet Mountain Wilderness Area with two copper mines. Living in an area of few jobs cannot justify destroying our best ground. Lincoln and Sanders counties must protect, not destroy, their pristine high mountain jewels. The value of our state’s most special public lands protected extends far beyond any reason to harm them.

Much ado about the Electoral College
Contrary to popular belief, the Electoral College was not designed to give an advantage to a single faction amidst the political party system. Although parties/factions certainly existed in the founding era, they bear no resemblance to the political structure that we must operate within today.

Overprotected wolves causing lots of harm
Fifteen or 20 years ago, when an occasional moose ran through our pasture, scaring the horses and upsetting the dogs, it was fun to see them. The key phrase is “ran through.” They didn’t hang around, damaging nursery plantings, attacking the dogs, or posing a threat when we went to the mailbox. After a couple of unpleasant encounters with moose, we don’t want the big, ugly things around.

Congress is completely out of control. First they pass legislation imposing deep automatic budget cuts, supposedly to force a budget agreement. Why should we punish our children because the state doesn’t know how to adequately fund our schools?
Yes to education, no to district levy
I support education. However, the current system is a money pit supporting teachers more than students.
Levy is too costly for retired residents
There are 793 properties for sale in Sandpoint, Hope and Sagle and the total price for all these properties is $394,194,886.
Enough is enough, vote 'no' on levy
Depending on supplemental levys for school budget is getting to be a habit. Of most concern is the constantly rising percentage of increase.
Our students deserve the best we can give
Why do we have to vote on a levy for our children to get the best education they can? Should our next generation go without because we do not want to give them the same opportunity we had as students?
Vote 'yes' to continue legacy of excellence
After reading the negative letters about the levy I have to say they are based on wrong information. Wrong either by design or ignorance, their information is not true.
Investment will pay off in many ways
As an educator, mother, and taxpayer, I am writing to express my support for the LPOSD levy on March 12.

Vote yes to support our schools, children
“It takes a village to raise a child.” An often used adage, appropriate in this instance. Simply: our schools require the continued support of the community in order to function.
Prison ordered in weapons case

Lessons learned in arts valuable in life
According to the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002: “The term ‘core academic subjects’ means English, reading or language arts, mathematics, science, foreign languages, civics and government, economics, arts, history and geography.” Title IX, Part A, sec. 9101(11)
Schools have become a lucrative business
Having been raised in Bonner County, much has been observed over the past 60-plus years. It is appalling that the school system has become such a lucrative business for many.
Klein, Hazinsky, Vogel garner All-NSL hoops honors
CLARK FORK — Clark Fork boys basketball coach Corey Vogel was named Coach of the Year, and seniors Joey Hazinsky and Zack Klein were each named to the All-North Star League boys basketball team, as voted on by the league’s coaches.
Nielsen opposes inter-fund loan repayment
SANDPOINT — Bonner County Commissioner Mike Nielsen is advocating against the repayment of $3.1 million in inter-fund loans because they violate the Idaho Constitution.
Support is needed to help schools thrive
Growing up in Sandpoint, I have a lot to be thankful for. A pristine lake, snow-capped mountains, and an incredibly diverse town are just the start of why Sandpoint is a fantastic place to grow up.
More equitable system needed to fund schools
I strongly support a good educational system for Bonner County for many of the reasons stated in the recent advertisement for the levy (paid for by school funds). However, I question why the burden of the levy should be borne only by property owners, many of whom are already being taxed off their properties. I question the argument that levies are reflected in increases for rent for non-property owners.
School district needs to make do with less
Observing LPOSD’s levy presentations, then reading Superintendent Shawn Woodward’s interview in the Bee, there are inconsistencies.
Bonner General seeks OK for aerial bridge
SANDPOINT — Bonner General Hospital and its planned medical office expansion could be united by a bridge in the sky.

An open letter to the representatives of District 1:
Engelhardt, Rasor and Bailey make GOP short list
SANDPOINT — Three potential successors to Bonner County Commissioner Joyce Broadsword’s seat on the board swiftly emerged on Tuesday.
Broadsword ignored obligations, voters
Joyce Broadsword’s resignation as Bonner County commissioner demonstrates irresponsibility and, in effect, transforms an elected position into a political appointment.
County demolishing parking deck
SANDPOINT — Bonner County is accelerating the demise of a failing parking deck overlooking Sand Creek.
GOP catered to base in criticism of Hagel
You just gotta love these Republicans: Graham, McCain, Cruz, and Inhofe. The way they clubbed Chuck Hagel down and proceeded to stomp the liver out of him was a piece of political thuggery akin to the art of swift-boating. What is it with Republicans and Vietnam vets?
Sharks tame waters at Inland Empire meet
SANDPOINT — Payton Bokowy dominated the sprints with first place in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle, as well as a second place finish in the 100 individual medley, leading a strong contingent of Sandpoint Sharks at the recent Inland Empire Course Championships, held at the University of Idaho Swim Center in Moscow.
Congressmen need to follow pope's lead
Pope Benedict stepped down because of his age and health issues and he says he cannot perform his required duties any longer. Good for him. So now all of the cardinals will decide who will be the next pope. I am pulling for Cardinal Sacola to be the new pope. Pope Sacola has a nice ring to it don’t you think?
Sign's cost akin to attempted theft
I wish to report an attempted theft by the Idaho Highway Department. During a recent accident, my girlfriend rubbed up against a 4x4 highway sign. The sign was not knocked down only pushed over a little. The highway department just sent me a bill for $651.72 to repair the sign.
NIC launches drive to fund science lab
SANDPOINT — A science lab could be the key to unlocking higher education in Bonner County.
Perry's strategy is political genius
I want to laud Gov. Rick Perry on his genius idea of drawing business from the blue states to the red states. But, make it a political strategy, instead of a business strategy. Business is the only thing keeping the blue states from drowning in their own self-manufactured sea of debt and there is no faster way to let the people see the facts than through the prism of their own wallets.
Senate vote was a sad day for freedom
Feb. 22 was a sad day for freedom. The Idaho Senate, bought and paid for by the big insurance companies, voted in favor of establishing a state healthcare exchange in accordance with Obamacare. For those of you who are unaware, in order for this expensive healthcare plan to be implemented, the states must establish an exchange. Twenty-eight states have refused. Idaho is the only Republican state that chose to cooperate with the feds on its invasive healthcare plan.

District levy just one of many upcoming fees
Concerning the upcoming school levy; with the large voting block of district employees, spouses and other voting-age family members, passage of the March 12 levy by a margin of roughly 60-40 percent is a foregone conclusion as usual. But, since school and levy funding doesn’t exist in a vacuum as many seem to imply, here are some other expenses the rest of us will also be dealing with.

Who will the levy truly impact?
Many believe that the property owners in Bonner County are the evil rich whose ill-gotten gains must be shared with the less fortunate and poor school district and its employees. Few seem to realize that the property people own is often the fruit of a lifetime of labor. A portal of security for retirees and or a struggling family.

School levies are the new entitlement
An entitlement is a guaranteed benefit under a government program. In the case of the forthcoming supplemental school levy, we have a case in which both the school district and the students benefit from a single levy.

We are getting the same doom-and-gloom predictions from the school people like we are getting from the federal government.

What happens when the future arrives?
In Tennessee, every year the mantra was repeated that, “the children are our future” in order to justify increasing the property tax or the sales tax so that more money could be spent for the public school system.
LPOSD proposed levy replaces current one
We have the opportunity to vote in support of a school levy that will replace the current levy.
Crying poverty and waltzing to the bank
In short, this is accomplished by fleecing the taxpayer. As I recall, a few years ago, there was no assistant administrator in the LPOSD. This position was created with a grant, sold to the school board with their approval by Dick Cvitanich.
Sports are a vital part of education, schools
As a three-season athlete, I understand the value of sports and extracurricular activities. I have seen how sports have allowed people to change and to grow. We learn teamwork, cooperation, time management, and most importantly, how to find ourselves. Without sports, many kids would not have anything else to turn to, athletics give us something to look forward to, something that will keep us out of trouble. They are vital in education and in schools.

Taxpayers still pay for charter schools
I strongly support the charter schools in Idaho. I think they are doing a wonderful job and wish them well in their future endeavors. However, I must comment on Mr. Millar’s statement about how the charter schools are financed.
Extracurricular are incredibly important
As a former SHS student-athlete, I can speak firsthand to the incredible importance of extracurricular activities.
House legislation addresses gun issues
The tragic grade school shooting in Newton, Conn., resulted in a renewed interest nationally on the issue of gun control and the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. The Obama Administration and members of Congress have been pursuing attempts to further restrict gun ownership and sales in reaction to some that are advocating more strict control of firearms in order to prevent instances similar to the shooting that occurred in Connecticut.
What skills do our students really need?
The tech industries in our country have needs for new employees with math and science skills; these needs exceed the “supply” provided by our own schools. That’s why immigration of people with math and science ability is expedited. And we have an enormous percentage of our own young people who are unemployed? There’s a message here. And please don’t tell me we need “activities” to keep math students in school.
