It was my honor to serve, for more than three years, as the director of technology for the county under the very capable chairmanship of Cary Kelly. I planned to serve the new board as well when Dan McDonald came on board in January 2017. His extremist political agenda coupled with his “my way or the highway” attitude was in stark contrast to the previous commissioners. Now the county staff, my unfortunate former colleagues, work under a blanket of fear fueled by Dan’s intolerance. And they can’t speak up because they will be intimidated or fired.

OT is a good option for many repetitive stress injuries

Carpal tunnel, tennis elbow, and golfer’s elbow — what do they all have in common? They can all be treated with conservative management under the care of an occupational therapist. Does this mean that surgery can always be avoided? Unfortunately no, but it does significantly reduce the likelihood for surgical intervention and it also promotes education on addressing underlying causes of symptoms to reduce future recurrence. Continue reading to learn about common treatment approaches and modalities utilized to treat these common disorders.

Richard Sevenich’s letter (Daily Bee, Sept. 9) raises a number of issues. Richard points out a correctly discredited article written in 1988 by a questionable organization of people. The strongest criticism was that only 12 percent of the “scientists” had a “… degree in earth, environmental or atmospheric sciences.” The problem is that Richard cites Snopes for the Dec. 24, 2016, critique. While perhaps originating with an objective purpose, Snopes’ lack of transparency raised doubts about its’ reliability (Forbes, Dec. 22, 2016, Kalev Leetaru) and by July 18, 2018, its “… writers are in the habit of injecting editorial language or opinions into their fact checks.” (Real Clear Politics, Bill Zeier). We’ve seen a lot of that since 2016.

Commissioner Dan McDonald’s condescending replies to Bonner County residents are offensive and inappropriate for an elected official. I encourage readers to look at his op ed responses (Aug. 30, 23, 12 and more). McDonald states they don’t know what they’re talking about or “you’re twisting the facts.” Really? McDonald said I had my facts wrong regarding Wooded Acres. I got my facts from county employees and records. McDonald supports taking taxpayer money from deserving roads to chip seal a dead-end road (Wooded Acres). Why? Because Wooded Acres residents throw money at him (pay to play). McDonald tells taxpayers he is saving them money. How? Taxpayer money would likely never be spent on Wooded Acres; it does not meet the 300 car count. Is McDonald moving the goal post?

Halleujah! Very well stated, Mr. Marc Bocciardi. Lake Pend Oreille does indeed have the potential to become a world-class, multi-species fishery if our management policy would not keep killing off very valuable game fish such as lake troute, walleye and warm-water fish. I have been delighted to fish around the world and have spent some big bucks to catch lake troute and walleye. In addition to the benefits such a fishery would offer the general economy of Bonner County. Millions of dollars in tourist spending would likely be the result.

Good posture or the lack of good posture is one of those topics that should be important to all of us. With so many of us working long hours in an office or clinical environment, that lends ourselves to chronic poor postural habits. I think it is pretty important to understand the impact posture has on your health.

Last summer, I had the opportunity to place my handprint on the civilian side of a door Melanie Foster, Jr. Vice Commander for the Department of Idaho Veterans of Foreign Wars, takes to veterans events. She helps raise awareness about suicide prevention, posttraumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injuries. Veterans have placed handprints on one side of the door, while families, friends and veteran advocates have signed the other side. As we recognize September as Suicide Prevention Month, I am reminded of the door’s message of our role as a community to keep the door open with support, encouragement and outstanding services that support return to civilian life.

POAC: What is art in the digital age?

“What is actual art?” This question comes up as the proliferation of images on cellphones and other digital media envelops us in an ever-expanding and mind-numbing swirl of visuals. Exchanging images has become a mundane part of our everyday world, something we do just to stay in touch with family and friends. Can these exchanges also serve artistic creation, producing striking and meaningful interactions among images? What would happen if two artists used cellphone photos to engage in a visual dialogue?
