Options for treating an enlarged prostate
King Charles III was recently in a hospital to undergo a procedure for an enlarged prostate — an extremely common condition among older men. The 75-year-old king is in good company. The prostate gland grows as men age. Its location below the bladder means the growing gland can cause problems with urination. Some men have more trouble than others. Doctors can recommend lifestyle changes and prescribe medications. And there are various surgical procedures to remove prostate tissue or widen the urethra when symptoms are especially troubling.

Cold snap shows the importance of community
I am renting this winter in Sandpoint — too hard for me out on the mountain. My pipes froze in the rental. Sandpoint to the rescue! A plumber, an electrician, a telephone system, roads, and clean water (hot and cold) — these are all basic services that could not exist without local, state, and federal government. For more than 20 years I have lived remotely, relying on government help: fire, roads, library, plumbers, and electricians —licensed by the government. Gasoline and the internet give me access far beyond our tiny community. Plowing the roads! Government-provided communication infrastructure means we have KRFY.

Indigenous faithful, Christians work to conserve sacred forests
Indigenous faithful and Christians work with environmentalists to conserve India's sacred forests
The northeast Indian state of Meghalaya is home to more than 125 sacred forests. These are tracts of virgin woodlands, which the Indigenous people believe are the abodes of their gods. Many of these forests are hallowed grounds where it is taboo to even pluck a leaf. The pantheistic local religious practices have waned with the advent of Christianity. The state is 75% Christian in a country that is majority Hindu. But environmentalists and some government programs are helping generate fresh enthusiasm for preserving these forests, which are water sources and treasure troves of biodiversity. Indigenous communities still perform rituals and animal sacrifices in or near these forests.

Staying healthy during cold, flu and COVID-19 season
Getting through winter healthy means trying to protect yourself from respiratory viruses. January can be the worst month for these illnesses and vaccination rates are low. When relatives, friends and co-workers are coming down with coughs, nasal congestion, fatigue and fever, keeping viruses at bay means thorough hand-washing, good ventilation and wearing a mask in crowded areas. If you do get sick, prompt testing can help determine whether you have COVID-19 or influenza. That's important to see if you need one of the medicines that can help prevent severe illness: Paxlovid for COVID-19 and Tamiflu for flu.

Mob mentality at work in county
In my 60 years as a local political junkie, I could never have dreamed the day would come when someone threatened to sue an elected official because of the “way” he “looked” at them. There will always be disagreements among elected officials and criticisms from the public. However, the vitriol being spewed by a handful of county residents tops anything I’ve ever seen locally.

Regulators: Florida can import prescription drugs from Canada
Federal officials have cleared the way for Florida to begin importing cheaper prescription drugs from Canada. It's the first time any U.S. state has used the approach and follows years of frustration with U.S. drug prices. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the plan into law in 2019, but it required approval by the Food and Drug Administration. Importing cheaper drugs has long been popular with patients and consumer groups, but faced years of pushback by the pharmaceutical industry. The politics of the issue have shifted in recent years. Both President Biden and former President Trump supported importing medications to help lower costs.

The agency said Thursday it will continue to review reports that some patients taking the drugs or similar ones had thoughts of suicide or attempted self harm. The agency says people taking the drugs should report any concerns to their health care providers.
Winter's here: A few tips for the road
Temperatures have dropped and snow is starting to stack up and the berms of snow along the roads are getting bigger. These colder temperatures make it very difficult for our operators to sand as it will be freezing the sand in our sanders, making them unable to use with more frequent trips to the shop to thaw out. Typically, when the temps drop below zero the roads will not be as slick and tend to dry out a bit. Cold temps make for brittle trees so expect when the weather starts to warm up that the winds will have an impact on them. We will clean them up as soon as possible. Do not touch any tree that has fallen on power lines. Even though it may look like there is no power the tree most likely could be energized. Leave them for the power company and us to clear. We work very closely with the power companies, and they will let us know if and when we can remove the tree. We will be doing what we can to keep the roads safe for the public. Folks should keep extra blankets and gloves in their vehicles for emergencies if needed.

Vatican announces plans to basilica's canopy
VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican has unveiled plans for a yearlong restoration of the monumental baldacchino, or canopy, over the altar of St. Peter's Basilica, pledging to complete the work on Bernini's masterpiece before Pope Francis' big 2025 Jubilee. The 700,000 euros, or $770,000, restoration and conservation project, funded entirely by the Knights of Columbus and using the expertise of Vatican Museums' restorers, marks the first comprehensive work on the 10-story tall baldacchino in 250 years. The structure, which is positioned over the basilica's main altar to provide a ceremonial covering for the tomb of St. Peter underneath, dates from the 1630s, when Pope Urban VIII commissioned Gian Lorenzo Bernini to create a canopy for the apostles' tomb.

Fulcher must strongly support America’s side of the war in Ukraine
Representative Russ Fulcher has failed to grasp that his repeated failure to support Ukraine in defending against Russia’s genocidal war is extremely harmful to America’s national security interests. Ukraine’s valiant fighters are shedding their blood to protect the freedom of the Ukrainian people. But their dogged defense has the side effect of bleeding and degrading Vladimir Putin’s war machine, reducing its threat against the United States and our allies. If the Ukrainians win, we won’t face the possibility of future hostilities with Russia. If they lose, we are in for continued conflict with Putin’s regime.

Study: Ultrasound tool may aid Alzheimer's drugs absorption
Scientists have found a way to help Alzheimer's drugs seep inside the brain faster — using sound waves to jiggle a temporary opening in its protective shield. Some new drugs modestly slow Alzheimer's worsening by attacking brain-clogging amyloid plaque, with doses every few weeks for well over a year. In a novel experiment, West Virginia University researchers added the ultrasound tool to three patients' drug doses for six months. In spots in the brain where that shield was opened, more plaque was cleared. The findings were published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine.

CDC: Flu, COVID infections got worse over holidays
The flu season in the U.S. is getting worse with 38 states reporting high or very high levels for respiratory illnesses. That's up from 31 states the week before. But it's too soon to tell how much holiday gatherings contributed to a likely spike in illnesses. The government data posted Friday is for the week after Christmas. That measure likely includes people with COVID-19, RSV and other winter viruses, and not just flu. But officials say flu seems to be increasing most dramatically and will for another few weeks. So far, it has been deemed a moderate flu season.

Little sets school buildings, water infrastructure and transportation as top priorities
Idaho Gov. Brad Little has unveiled a plan to boost Idaho's education, water and transportation infrastructure during his annual "State of the State" address. Little presented his proposal to lawmakers gathered at the Statehouse for the first day of the legislative session Monday. He says too many of Idaho's school buildings are neglected and falling apart, and said a $2 billion investment in school facilities over 10 years would serve as a form of long-term property tax relief. Idaho's school facilities are largely funded through property taxes, and districts often must ask voters to approve levies to fix leaky roofs or otherwise improve buildings. Little also proposed funding to improve transportation and boost water capacity during drought.

LAUNCHing into bright futures
Applications for LAUNCH grants surpass expectations
It is ideal for Idaho to always have jobs available for Idaho kids. This produces a positive business climate and a labor force that can fuel that positive business climate, Lt. Gov. Scott Bedke said. Idaho LAUNCH grants, which pay for 80% or up to $8,000 of post-high school training and education over two years, are on their way to helping the Gem State and its students align on that trajectory. “This is just the next step in getting our kids well educated so they can be well positioned for life,” Bedke said. Bedke and Gov. Brad Little held a press conference Thursday at the StanCraft Jet Center in Hayden to share the news that applications for Idaho's LAUNCH program catapulted beyond expectations as 12,588 high school seniors across Idaho submitted or started applications for the grants as of Dec. 28.

Idaho’s AG must act with civility toward the judiciary
Idaho lawyers are expected to act with respect, dignity, and candor toward judges and the court system. They are presumed to understand that a “correct” interpretation of the law is often uncertain. Judges have the job of deciding the law in cases brought before them. Most often, one litigant wins and the other loses. If every loser’s lawyer made unfounded public utterances against the presiding judge, it would be extremely corrosive of the rule of law.

As exemption rates rise, health officials push to get youth vaccinated
Parents are opting out of school vaccinations at the highest rate ever. Last school year, that amounted to 3% of U.S. children entering kindergarten. The highest rate was 12% in Idaho, where a change in state law a few years ago made it easier to opt out. All states require students to have certain vaccines to attend public school, and often private school and daycare. Exemptions are given for medical reasons, and sometimes for religious beliefs or personal reasons. Most states saw an increase in exemption rates last year.
