HAYDEN LAKE — The Coeur d'Alene golf team came close to defending their home tournament on Monday, but Ferris proved to be too steady.

After tying Ferris with scores of 307 to get into the full-squad sudden death playoff, the Vikings lost by a score of 16-19 on the first playoff hole at the Avondale Golf and Tennis Club.

All five members from each squad teed off on the first hole and the top-four scores for each team were counted. Ferris had all pars while Coeur d'Alene got one par and three bogeys.

"It was fun for everybody," Coeur d'Alene coach Darren Hull said. "We played well. We're just hoping to peak at the right time as we get into districts and state."

Ferris and Coeur d'Alene separated themselves from the rest of the 20-team field by beating third place Post Falls' "Black" team by 16 strokes. Sandpoint, led by sophomore Joey Lovell's 86, finished with 377 points for 14th place.

"Three of the five kids had never played Avondale before, and Avondale is a tough course for the people who do play it," said Sandpoint coach Mike Keough. "Add the weather conditions … I think it all took a toll."

Ferris' Craig Leslie earned medalist honors with a 66, seven shots better than the second place score of 73 by Tyler Lynn of Ferris, David Nuhn of Moscow and Zach Boughton of Post Falls.

The Bulldogs will host the Sandpoint Invitational at Hidden Lakes on Monday.
