Clair Duane Van Schaack

Clair Duane Van Schaack passed away on March 21, 2004, in Dallas, Ore., from cancer.

Duane was born Sept. 19, 1928, in White River, S.D., to Clair and Rose Van Schaack.

He came with his family to Clark Fork, Idaho, in 1935. He attended school in Clark Fork and Sandpoint. After his high school graduation, he attended the University of Idaho in Moscow.

After completing college, he served in the U.S. Army in Germany. After his discharge from the Army, he spent several years as a teacher, counselor and vice principal in Idaho and Washington schools. He also worked in construction throughout his life.

Duane was a great cook and also enjoyed painting pictures.

Duane is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughters, Ariane Lyons and Dena Gilmore; granddaughters, Tory, Paige, Whitney and Ryle Gilmore; four sisters, Elaine Van de Mark, Ellen Fey, Dolores Erickson and Barbara Johnson; five stepchildren, Anne Turner, Jeanne Abbott, James, John and Curtis Brunelle and 14 grandchildren.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Roy, who was killed while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Interment was in Dallas, Ore.
