Sunday liquor sales would be tragic move

| August 11, 2004 9:00 PM

My qualifications for writing this article can be attributed to my having served 20 years with the Los Angeles Police Department.

Prior to being assigned to the detective bureau I was assigned to uniform patrol, accident investigation, and felony hit-and-run investigations. Like my fellow officers, I had my share of arresting untold numbers of drunken drivers, investigating hundreds of alcohol-related accidents resulting in simple fender benders, minor to major traffic accidents, injuries, and deaths. I cannot agree that "most drunken drivers are from drinkers of beer." Statistics do not support this.

And, I also do not agree with those who support Sunday sales of alcohol. Think about it, every day liquor stores are open increases the chances of additional drunken drivers, accidents, injuries, and deaths. Increased revenue to the city or county will never justify one single death on our highways.

Something else to consider is a Sunday evening, or Monday traffic death on our local highways that conceivably was a result from a Sunday sale.

I wouldn't want it on my conscience if I had voted for the Sunday sales of alcohol, and I read in the Bee of a Monday death of someone's father, mother, child (children), or other family member resulting from drunken driving. One death is one too many.

Might I add, that "simple," to "major assaults," and many family abuses are a direct result of drinking. So, we now must consider homicide due to alcohol abuse. The list goes on.
