Bypass issues needs leadership, not war

| August 15, 2004 9:00 PM

We're at war in Iraq, fighting a war on terrorism, a war on drugs and a war on poverty. We don't need a civil war in Bonner County. Threats of a recall or a boycott will not solve the division of thought we are all experiencing right now. Recalling elected officials will nto change anyone's mind on how they feel about the byway/bypass. It will only further divide neighbors. Boycotting certain businesses will not bridgethe gap, it will only hurt those trying to eke out a living and take care of their families.

This byway/bypass issue is getting way out of hand. It's become all-consuming and making good friends choose sides. We need to take a deep breath and stop the bomb throwing. Level heads are questioning the logic and rhetoric of those so deeply involved. Whether it happens or not, let's not let a piece of roadway put this community asunder.

We don't need bomb throwers, we need leadership. Let's call a cease-fire and let cooler heads prevail. Remember that Sandpoint is a walking town and bomb throwers are dangerous.
