Mire rains 3-pointers in Newport, Sandpoint wins 61-38

NEWPORT — Sandpoint junior Ashleigh Mire finished with a game-high 21 points — all from behind the 3-point line — to lead the Bulldogs to a 61-38 victory over Newport in non-league action on Saturday afternoon.

Adding to Sandpoint's total was Kelsey James, who finished with 14 points. Caitlyn Free scored eight.

Unfortunately, Sandpoint coach Scott Salesky said Bulldog fans had to wait a period before witnessing much in the way of shooting — at least from Sandpoint — as Newport took an early lead.

"You can't fall behind most teams 13-7 and recover," said Salesky. "But once we snapped out of the funk we were just fine.

"Mire was hot. She hit seven 3-pointers and Kelsey James and Caitlyn Free also shot the ball well."

The Bulldogs (3-1) play host to Lake City at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Les Rogers court in Sandpoint.
