Shelter dogs would help store's sales
I was moved by Ed Bittner's plea for Wal-Mart to once again allow him to offer Panhandle Animal Shelter's dogs for adoption in their roomy entrance way.
I was dogless for some years when my children lived in Minnesota and Montana and I traveled from the East Coast to see them.
Now I am here in Sandpoint with one and near the other two — and the delighted owner of a shelter dog.
Abandoned at age 8, she was skin and bones, a 30-pound shepherd greyhound mix, we thought. Now she is 45 pounds and looks like a shepherd. Not only do I have loyal company, but also the satisfaction of seeing her bloom.
Many others would share this joy and satisfaction if Mr. Bittner were back at Wal-Mart with the canine orphans. They were a public relations coup for Wal-Mart, at no expense to the store. The new manager would be well advised to reconsider.
Furthermore, some of us are reluctant to shop Wal-Mart because of its practices with labor and its suppliers. Helping the shelter find homes for hundreds of dogs would help counterbalance this and actually increase business.
