Warm weather and moisture hamper efforts to open Schweitzer resort

| December 13, 2004 8:00 PM

SANDPOINT — Another inch of rain fell Friday night at Schweitzer Mountain bringing total rainfall from this latest system to over 3 inches. This has literally washed away any chances of opening Schweitzer Mountain this weekend. The pineapple express that came in Thursday and Friday had devastating effects on the ski resorts throughout the region. Schweitzer had initially announced an opening date of Dec. 11th after a snowfall of almost 2 feet on Wednesday night.

"Mother Nature has been very fickle this week," says Ron Nova, general manager, "We were hopeful, this pineapple express would not hit us so hard. Simply put, we do not have an acceptable skiing product and are therefore, unable to open the resort. We are keeping our eye on the forecast and are eager to open as soon as the conditions allow. It is expected to get colder throughout the day which will help us retain a base layer but more snowfall is necessary to secure an operation."
