Merritt A. Scott, 77

Merritt A. Scott, 77, went to be with the Lord on Dec. 9, 2004.

Services will be held at Thornhill Funeral Home on Pines at 1 p.m. Friday, dec. 17, 2004. viewing will be held from 5-8 p.m. on thursday and prior to the service.

He was born June 7, 1927, and was raised in Sandpoint, Idaho. "sScott" as his friends and family called him, joined the U.S. Navy at age 17. He was present during the atomic bomb testing in the in the Pacific atolls in 1947-48 and proudly served in World War II, the Korean Kar and Vietnam War retiring with the rank of chief petty officer in 1966.

He and his family settled in the Spokane valley after his Navy retirement. A few years later he began to work for Washington state, serving the Air National Guard as a plant mechanic, retiring in 1983.

Scott was an avid fisherman, hunter and family man who loved to garden and took up bee keeping as a hobby after retirement. In addition to teaching his children, he taught many a young sailor how to hunt in the woods and continued to hunt even when his health was failing. As a family man he instilled in his children a love for the woods, fishing and camping.

Friends and family loved his quick wit and twinkling eyes and respected his short temper. He enjoyed family outings and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandson. He will be missed by all.

Scott was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1435, Disabled American Veterans and Spokane Navy Fleet Reserve, Branch No. 38 and attended Foothills Community Church.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Evelyn; and children Janet Scott, Chris and Buck Buckholdt, Janice and David Coburn, Jim and Theresa Scott and Merri and Bruce Nickerson, 11 grandchildren and a great-grandson. He is also survived by his sister, Betty Kester of Lebanon, Ore.; and three brothers, Richard Scott of Bunker Hill, Ind., Clyde Scott of Lynnwood, Wash., and Howard Scott of Everett, Wash. Brothers Donald and Charles precede him in death.

Thornhill Valley Funeral Home of Spokane Valley, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.
