SANDPOINT — Scoring 11 unanswered points in the second period, the Sandpoint boys basketball team cruised to a 66-48 victory over Lakeland in Inland Empire League action Tuesday night.

Senior Anthony Sorentino led the Bulldog with a team-high 20 points, while junior Michael Brewer added 12 to the scoreboard.

"All and all, I think the kids did a good job executing game plan we set out to do on Monday," said Sandpoint boys basketball coach Tyler Haynes. "The plan was to make (Ryan) Gallia work very, very hard and not let the rest of them beat us. He still got 26 points, which was an incredible job considering we threw three guys at him continuously. But, defensively we didn't let them get into a rhythm and I think that really helped us."

The Hawks were led Gallia who also finished with six rebounds and three steals.

"Sandpoint came out, beat us down the floor and got transition baskets which created a mountain of a lead we had to fight against," said Lakeland coach Trent Derrick. "Every time we tried to get a little higher on that mountain, Sandpoint would hit a big three or we'd foul and they'd get to the line. Sandpoint is a quality team and they did a good job tonight."

Sandpoint shot 54.8 percent from the field and 68.4 from the free throw line. The Hawks averaged just 40.9 percent from the field.

"Our shot selection was a lot better tonight," said Haynes. "We had watched Lakeland on film and they are a very patient team. So we took a chapter out of their book tonight."

The Bulldogs (1-0, 3-2) play Kellogg at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday in Sandpoint.
