Sandpoint edges Lakeland 38-36

SANDPOINT — Whether it was a defensive triumph or an offensive disaster is still up for debate.

However, both coaches agreed it was a bit boring for the fans to watch — since the best either Sandpoint or Lakeland could do was shoot 31.7 percent from the field.

"It was a strange game," said Sandpoint girls basketball coach Scott Salesky, who was boggled by the lackluster performance.

"I can't remember a 4A varsity game, that I've been involved with coaching her in Sandpoint, that had a lower amount of intensity," said Salesky. "Both teams were sleep walking until the fourth quarter when it turned into a race for all the marbles. Lucky for us they were cold … I really don't know how else to describe it."

On the other hand, Lakeland coach Steve Seymour attributed the lack of scoring to an intense defensive effort by both squads.

"I thought our intensity level was great the whole game and that's why you see the low scores," said Seymour. "At least on our half, I thought we go after it defensively … But, offensively there were times we could throw it in the ocean."

The Bulldogs were led by senior post Elle Carne, who finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. Senior Caitlyn Free had 10 points and seven rebounds.

Junior Brigitte Boucher led the Hawks with 10 points and four rebounds, while sophomore Mindy Meyer added nine points. Senior Jessie Bartlett had four assists and three steals.

The Bulldogs (2-2, 4-3) will play Kellogg at 6 p.m. on Saturday in Sandpoint.
