Religious signs are poor welcome to city

| December 20, 2004 8:00 PM

How do you like this sign on the northwest corner of First Avenue and Superior — right where you make the turn after the Long Bridge welcoming everyone (?) who drives into town this season? There was also one very similar that was put up in that same spot welcoming everyone to Thanksgiving in Sandpoint with a different Bible quote giving thanks for Jesus our lord. I find these signs very offensive.

Of course I would have no objection to a citizen exercising their right to free speech, except for the presentation, which makes it look like it was put up by the city of Sandpoint and that Sandpoint is a Christian community. While there may be a lot of Christian people who live here, Sandpoint celebrates diversity and this sign clearly does not. These signs are an embarrassment to me and to the community.
