Return celebration to Fourth of July

| July 1, 2004 9:00 PM

This letter is in response to moving the 4th of July holiday to July 3rd.

I feel this has been done to appease a fraction of the community without taking into account the importance of this holiday.

The 4th of July has special significance in recognizing the freedoms of all Americans. The Christian ministers should not be able to change the holiday for the non-Christian members of our community. We wouldn't change the Christmas holiday of December 25th if it fell on a less convenient day of the week.

Freedom of religion is one of the most important freedoms our country is based on. Celebrating the 4th of July on a Sunday is a way to honor and respect those who have sacrificed their lives to ensure these freedoms for everyone.

With the circumstances as they are in the world, we should be even more respectful of the men and women protecting our freedoms. It is a travesty that our American flags will not be displayed in our town on the 4th of July. Let's get our patriotism back to where it belongs — on the day our forefathers chose to remember our independence and freedom.
