Ultimate tournament in the ultimate setting

SANDPOINT — Frisbee enthusiast from three states and two Canadian provinces converged on North Idaho for an ultimate frisbee tournament at Sandpoint High School over the weekend.

"We got great reports from everyone who came," said David Marx, one of the event organizers.

Moscow won the championship game against Missoula 13-5 on Sunday to conclude the eight-team coed tournament. Sandpoint's entry finished sixth overall.

"I think the biggest highlight was introducing a bunch of people, who had never been here before, to Sandpoint and they all just fell in love with the area," said Marx, who pointed out that each team consisted of 14-18 players.

Ultimate is an exciting, non-contact team sport, played by thousands the world over. It mixes the best features of sports such as soccer, basketball, football and netball into a simple yet demanding game.

To compete at the top level, Ultimate players require speed, stamina and agility. Yet the simplicity of the rules means it's easy and fun for newcomers to pick up.

Organizers of last weekend's event still haven't decided exactly when or how future tournaments will transpire, however, there is a desire by many who participated to make it an annual competition.

"I'm just glad everyone enjoyed themselves, and they all wanted to come back," he added.
