Raymond T. Greene Jr., 85

| July 13, 2004 9:00 PM

Longtime Bonner County resident Raymond T. Greene Jr., 85, passed away on July 3, 2004. He had been briefly hospitalized in Spokane at the VA and then Sacred Heart for a sudden illness.

All six of his children were in attendance. He was preceded in death by his wife, Julie, 10 years earlier.

Memorial services for Raymond and Julie Greene will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 17, 2004, in Coffelt's Moon Chapel. The services will be under the direction of the Bonner County veterans organizations.

Raymond was born on June 4, 1919, to Raymond T. Greene Sr. and Nelle G. Greene, and grew up in Mackay. He had attended Hill Military Academy in Oregon and then went to college at the University of Idaho. His college was delayed by World War II. He'd enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in France, going ashore after the initial D-Day landings at Normandy. He was injured in combat and, during some leave time, he met Julie Pimay, the Belgian lady he subsequently married.

The war ended and Raymond returned to America. His new wife came to America shortly after; it was her first time away from Europe.

It would be 30 years until Raymond and Julie went back to Europe. They lived in Mackay briefly and Raymond returned to college, where he got his law degree. They then moved to Sandpoint in 1947, where Ray practiced law until 2000, retiring at 80 years of age.

Ray and Julie had six children during their marriage: Raymond, Bruce, Teresa, Day, Greg and Roland. Three live here locally, two in Boise and one in San Francisco, Calif.

Raymond had been a supportive father to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. All will miss him.

His death also marks the passing of another old soldier, one of the ever-dwindling numbers of the "greatest generation." Raymond always had been a staunch supporter of our veterans, spending much time with them, especially those who were injured in service to our country.

Memorials may be made to Veterans Van, in care of the Veterans of Foreign War, 1325 Pine St., Sandpoint, ID, 83864.

Final arrangements for Raymond and Julie are under the care of Coffelt Funeral Service of Sandpoint.
