One of my very favorite pet peeves is, "Actions speak louder than words." Just watch the actions — people tell on themselves all the time.

So, as far as the proposed bypass is concerned, the actions in the Fifth Avenue corridor project by the Idaho Transportation Department speak loud and clear.

During planning meetings for the corridor project, there was talk of landscaping and maintenance. Some of the words used at the time by ITD were "planting trees," "spraying grass and wildflowers" so that the entrance would be attractive.

What we ended up with is a weeds, dead shrubs and trees, spotted grass areas with puddles along the way into town. The six trees that were planted to replace the grove of maples have all died except one. The other shrubs have also died.

The owners of the auto parts store and Serve-A-Burger mow the grass and weeds in front of their businesses. Does ITD reimburse them for their labor?

All the pretty pictures of the bypass — the landscaping and maintenance of the project — does not impress me. The proof for me are the actions of ITD on Fifth Avenue.

People of Sandpoint: Look around the next time you drive into town and look at the actions of ITD. They speak loud and clear.

Idaho Transportation Department: Let's see some actions to back your words, starting with the Fifth Avenue corridor. After we watch you for a while, maybe we can trust you with more.
