Show support for PFLAG, attend film

| June 21, 2004 9:00 PM

Many years ago when my daughter "came out" as a lesbian I went into my own closet and needed help in learning how to respond to family and friends. With the support of PFLAG — Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays — I learned to deal with my emotions and to celebrate her "difference" as a learning experience that helped me to a greater acceptance of and love for all of God's children. I loved and accepted her as the same beautiful person she was before I had this new information. I learned not to judge others and that my fear of rejection by my peers was nothing more than my own fear. I still have, however, a concern for her safety and for the safety of all persons who are marginalized and hated by some in our society.

PFLAG is the nation's largest family-based group of its kind. Begun in 1972, its mission is to support, educate and advocate for basic human rights. Acts of vandalism and displays of hatred toward gays in our area indicate intolerance and evidence the need for a PFLAG chapter in Sandpoint. Our helpline offers anonymous, confidential assistance and we offer support meetings and maintain a library.

My involvement with PFLAG is a ministry of love, compassion and commitment. The community is invited to show support for our mission by attending the award-winning, star-studded documentary, "The Celluloid Closet" on Wednesday at the Panida along with a raffle and door prizes and refreshments. Call 263-6699 for information. Join me for an informative and entertaining evening and help keep PFLAG alive and well.
