Support students, vote yes on levy

As administrative and structure changes begin to take place in the Lake Pend Oreille School District more problems have arrived: Money.

The LPOSD is asking voters on March 23 to support a $3 million one-year levy. This levy is to replace the one voted on two years ago for $2.2 million per year, two-year levy that will expire in June.

I am in sports, music, journalism and other extracurricular activities. If this levy doesn't pass, these are going to be few of the many programs cut.

As previous articles in the Cedar Post and Daily Bee have stated, Sandpoint High School is looking into the possibility of block scheduling next year. As graduation requirements increase, we need more room to take more classes.

Without the levy we will not be able to hire the teachers needed and won't be able to go to block scheduling. As requirements heighten we won't be able to take as many elective classes such as music, art, foreign languages, etc.

This year we had to raise funds just have workbooks for French class next year and distribute phone books for money for athletics, as well as many other numerous fund-raisers.

Hopefully the money given to specific categories can eliminate how much fund-raising we actually do.

The levy will be broken into these following categories; $1.25 million for staffing, $707,000 for technology, $600,000 for curriculum and text books, $200,000 for student activities and $235,000 for maintenance.

If voters pass the levy, taxes will increase 30 percent above the current level, costing owners of a $100,000 home about $30 more per year.

The future of this city and the education of its children is the most important thing we can have.
