Shifting line could ease congestion

| March 31, 2004 8:00 PM

The next time you're in town and heading north to the mall, as you pass through the intersection of Fifth and Larch ask yourself this question: Is it really necessary for these two northbound lanes to merge for a couple of hundred yards?

As you pass under the railroad overpass, think about this: What if the center line were moved left a few feet? Wouldn't there then be room for two continuous northbound lanes, and still enough room for the one southbound lane? What if there was a sign on the railroad overpass, designating the left lane "Highway 95" and the right lane "Highway 200?" Wouldn't that be a fairly low-cost traffic-flow improvement?
