Madelyn Margaret (Whittum) Luckey Hansen, 85, passed away on Sunday, May 2, 2004, in Sandpoint.
Memorial graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 8, 2004, at Evergreen Cemetery in Priest River with Pastor Dwain Valez officiating.
Madelyn was born on Jan. 6, 1919, in St. Ignatius, Mont., the eighth of 12 children of William O. and Nora Mae (Parker) Whittum. She moved at the age of 8 from Montana to the Yakima, Wash., area for a few years before homesteading in the Hoodoo Valley at Edgemere in 1927 and attended school in Edgemere and Sandpoint High School.
She married Alvin Luckey in Sandpoint in 1937, moving to Priest River a few years later and resided there. She worked at driving truck in the early years, later started Luckey's Feed and Fuel in Newport, Wash., and operated it for 15 years. They were divorced in 1965.
Madelyn worked for the Bonner County School District as a bus driver in Priest River and also as a bookkeeper for Tony Jacketta at Runcks Garage for several years while working as a Route 1 substitute mail carrier, lasting for 14 years. She later became a full-time mail carrier for six years before retiring in 1982 due to health reasons.
She married Leigh E. Hansen in March 1970 and they were married for more than 34 years.
Survivors include her husband, Leigh Hansen of Priest River; a son, Harold (Karen) Luckey of Utah; a daughter, Claudia (Dwight) Pelfrey of Alabama; grandchildren, Kimberly (James) Butler of Utah, Lisa (Paul) Hughes of Alabama, John (Elizabeth) Pelfrey of Alabama, Tracy (Herb) Lundy of Alabama, Rhett (Jennifer) Pelfrey of Alabama, Adam Pelfrey of Alabama and Matthew (Annamaria) Pelfrey of New York City, N.Y.; three great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews; a sister, Irene Salerno of Priest River; and a brother, Walter "Bud" (Mable) Whittum of Auburn, Wash.
