City needs facts on 911 before reacting

| May 17, 2004 9:00 PM

If this story is correct with all of it's information, I am left with a few quandaries.

My first question to our esteemed mayor is how exactly he knows they are going to have to scrap plans and go through massive budget corrections if he has not yet sat down with the county personnel? Is he simply being apocalyptic?

My next question is why would our fair city lose money? Were we making money on the old system? Is that how it is supposed to work? I was unaware that government sponsored emergency services were provided with profit in mind. I could have sworn we had a little tax increase to cover the dispatch service as it now stands.

My final question is this: Why does it matter who provides the service if it is provided uniformly and within acceptable standards? The county representative who commented in the article on Saturday stated that she didn't believe that their actually would be a fee increase to the city.

These are two conflicting reports by two separate individuals. Perhaps before the mayor decides to sandbag city beautification, he could actually sit down and get his facts straight to better represent the citizens of our city.

Feeding on the fears of local businesses with vague and extreme statements can be catastrophic in a small community such as ours.

Please editor, send someone to cover the meeting scheduled for this month. It is obvious we need a true source of information on this very vital issue.

Obviously our elected representative likes to jump to conclusions. It may be mindful to remember that next election.
