Dick Hemus passed quietly at home, surrounded by family and friends, on Tuesday Nov. 16, 2004.

A gathering in his honor will take place at the residence of Chris and David Kraisler, at 517 N. 4th Ave. in Sandpoint, on Tuesday, Nov. 23, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Dick was born May 10, 1938, in Laguna Beach, Calif. He graduated from the University of California, Long Beach, and went on to get a master's degree from Pepperdine University. He served in active duty for the U.S. Coast Guard.

He married his wife, Carol, in 1973. They met while teaching school in Laguna Beach, where he had a 30-year career as an industrial arts teacher.

Upon retirement, Dick and Carol moved to Garfield Bay on Lake Pend Oreille. Dick loved to travel in his RV; he enjoyed woodworking and spending time with his beloved Springer spaniel, Lily. He loved to golf, water ski and snow ski. He loved teaching and was a ski instructor at Schweitzer for 1 3 years. He also played the notorious Phineas J. Schweitzer — inventor of Stella. He was an avid runner and cyclist. He competed in many triathlons and marathons, including the 2003 New York Marathon.

He is survived by his wife Carol; two daughters, Janis Strockis of San Diego, Calif., and Connie Coatsworth of Costa Mesa, Calif.; his brother, Robert Hemus of Happy Camp, Calif., as well as his many loving friends and extended family members.

In lieu of flowers and gifts, donations can be made to the Lance Armstrong Foundation or the Bonner County Hospice.
