Vera R. Jones, 96
Vera R. Jones died peacefully on Nov. 18, 2004, at the age of 96 at Valley Vista.
Vera was born to Grace and Bertrum Lines in Sandpoint on September 18, 1908. She married Walter L. Jones in Sandpoint on Nov. 26, 1924. They were married 70 years when he passed away on Dec. 28, 1994.
Among their many professions, Walt and Vera managed grocery stores and had a shingle mill. When the mill burned down, they managed to get a loan in 1938 to start a motel, which is now the late Lakeside Inn. They worried for years that the highway bypass would pass through and take out their motel. Happily they never knew that it was actually going to happen.
After selling the motel in 1970, the two made their home on Main and Cedar streets. Vera loved people and watching the traffic. Her porch was ideal spot to watch the July 4th parade with family and friends. She was often seen on her porch visiting with those who passed by.
Vera moved to Evergreen Assisted Living and called it home for six years. Three weeks ago, Vera's health deteriorated and she moved to Valley Vista.
Vera was honored as being the longest continuing living person in Sandpoint of which she was very proud. Vera loved Sandpoint. She was quoted as saying that she did not want to be moved when she became old. She said "I was born in Sandpoint, raised in Sandpoint, made my living in Sandpoint, and I want to die in Sandpoint."
Vera was loved by everyone who knew her. She had a great sense of humor, a positive spirit, and blessed with common sense.
Vera is survived by her two daughters, Eila McNew-Higgins and husband, Jim; and Sharon Clizer and husband, Wes. Vera is also survived by 10 grandchildren, several great- and great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Grace and Bertram Lines; husband, Walter L. Jones; a son, Grant M.(Bud) Jones; brothers, Bert, Chet, Dick and Pat Lines; and a sister, Gladys (Jim) Strecker.
In reference to her life she was quoted as saying "It has been a great roller coaster ride!"
