Merton Douglas 'Doug' Moran, 78

Merton Douglas "Doug" Moran, 78, passed away on Nov. 24, 2004, at his home in Sandpoint, Idaho.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at Coffelt's Moon Chapel with Pastor Darryn Hewson of the United Methodist Church officiating. Full military honors will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at Coffelt's Moon Chapel.

Doug was born on Oct. 9, 1926, in Sandpoint, Idaho, the son of Merton James and Mary (Shonewald) Moran. He grew up in Sandpoint and attended local schools, graduating from Sandpoint High School in 1944.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and trained at Farragut Naval Base. He served aboard the Destroyer class ship William R. Rusk and was a fireman first class. Following his honorable discharge in 1946 after World War II, he returned to Sandpoint.

Doug married Norma Jean O'Donnell on April 27, 1946, and they lived at the Farragut Naval Base, attending college for two years.

Doug joined the United States Postal Service in 1950 and retired as an operations supervisor in 1981 after 31 years of service.

He was a bowler and trap shooter, winning many trophies and awards for both. He also enjoyed traveling, especially to the Oregon Coast and the Grand Tetons. Doug was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing and hunting.

After Norma's passing in 1985, Doug again found love and on June 20, 1987, he was wed to Gloria McNearney. At the time of his passing, they had been married more than 17 years.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria Moran of Sandpoint; four sons, Mike (Sydney) Moran of Sagle, Dan (Louella) Moran of Sandpoint, Tom (Michell) Moran of Sagle and Jim (Maureen) of Boise; a daughter, Patty (Dave) Forrester of Boise; 19 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Phyliss Dennison of Spokane, Wash., and Jeannie Fellows of San Mateo, Calif.; three stepsons, Mick (Brenda) Lauritzen of Spokane, Russell (Donna) McNearney of Boise, Idaho, and Steve McNearney of Phoenix, Ariz.; and numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Merton and Mary Moran; and his first wife, Norma Jean Moran.
