Sandpoint topples St. Maries

ST. MARIES — Four Sandpoint players hit double figures and the Bulldogs used offensive rebounding and fast breaks to ruin the Lumberjacks' season opener.

Ben Mitchell scored 14 points to lead Sandpoint (2-0), which outrebounded St. Maries 39-20. Led by Mitchell, Michael Brewer and Paul DiBenedetto, the Bulldogs grabbed 23 offensive rebounds.

DiBenedetto and Blake Mahler each added 11 points for Sandpoint.

Sandpoint led 29-21 at halftime, then outscored St. Maries 26-5 in the third quarter.

At halftime, St. Maries retired a jersey in honor of Cody Johnson, a schoolmate who died in a car accident at the end of the school year last year.

Cameron Michael hit 4 of 10 3-pointers and scored a game-high 16 points for St. Maries.

St. Maries plays host to Orofino on Friday.
