Sandpoint and Lakeland end in a 1-1 tie

| October 5, 2004 9:00 PM

SANDPOINT — The Lakeland Hawks left Memorial Field with their heads held high after holding the Sandpoint girls soccer team to a 1-1 stalemate Tuesday.

"Lakeland is pretty tallented and they have a good group of sophomores who are going to be good in the years to come," said Sandpoint coach Adam Tajan.

Despite racking up 19 shots on goal, Sandpoint's only goal of the game was an unassisted shot by Brooke Donnelly in the 20th minute.

In contrast, Lakeland had just one shot on goal. However the kick by senior Katie Douglas in the 74th minute was enough to end the game tied, 1-1.

"There isn't a team in this league that we shouldn't step on the field with and just crush," said Tajan. "Literally it should be 4-0 and 3-0 games without question, but it's hard to convince the girls to take it out of cruise control, hit fifth gear and keep it pinned to the floor for 80 minutes."

Standing strong for Lakeland (4-4-2, 6-4-2) in goal was Amanda North who repelled a multitude of shots to finish with 18 saves.

Sandpoint (8-0-2, 10-2-3) will play the Vikings in Coeur d'Alene on Tuesday.
