Sandpoint is overdue for a highway bypass

| October 6, 2004 9:00 PM

Well said, Ernie. It's time to give those dear old beautiful historic buildings in the downtown area a rest … between the fumes, rattling windows, congestion let alone the hazards which are waiting in the wings, Sandpoint is long overdue for a bypass. No one disputes the beauty of the area, but it's time to remove the eighteen wheelers from Main Street.

As a local, I truly dread threading my way through the downtown streets in their present state. There are no easy answers, as proven by the worn arguments and discussions for and against the bypass since the thought was first presented in 1953.

It's time to stop the nonsense and get on with what is inevitable. Then let's concentrate on looking to the future and how each and everyone one of us can "rejoin" our community and take it back to its roots.
