Bernice L. Spade, 84, passed away in Sandpoint, Idaho, on Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, in Coffelt's Moon Chapel. Pastor Jon Pomeroy of First Church of God will officiate. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. Friday in the Westmond Cemetery.

Friends may call to pay their respects on Thursday, Oct. 14, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Coffelt Funeral Service.

Bernice was born in Odessa, Neb., on Oct. 4, 1920. She attended schools in Nebraska and married Pascal Spade in Phillipsberg, Kan., on May 8, 1937. They came to Kootenai, Idaho, on July 11, 1937, driving a Model T truck. In 1944, the family moved to Sagle and operated the family farm.

Bernice was known for her leadership in 4-H and, at the time of her death, was still a leader in the Sagle Yodeling Coyotes 4-H Club. She won many awards, including the "Sapphire" award for 35 years of leadership.

On Aug. 25, 1990, she was inducted into the Epsilon Sigma Phi honorary extension fraternity in recognition of outstanding public service to the state of Idaho.

For 25 years, Bernice served on the Bonner County Fair Board. She worked with several advisory committees and has volunteered many hours to the market animal committee. She served as superintendent of both the 4-H and open swine and sheep departments. She worked as a fair judge in Boundary County and at other district events.

She was a member of the Sagle School PTA and held all of the offices. She worked with the Bonner County Needs Assessment Committee and served as secretary of the citizens tax committee.

For many years, Bernice was the Sagle news correspondent for the Sandpoint News Bulletin, writing the local news and stories.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Pascal Spade of Sagle, Idaho; eight children, Jerry Spade of Sagle, Tom (and Barbara) Spade of Sunnyside, Idaho, Dick (and Lillian) Spade of Sagle, Gary Spade of Cocolalla, Idaho, Ray (and Mary Jane) of Careywood, Patty (and Clint) Harkey of Sagle, Karen Spade of Sagle and Donna Parnell of Sagle; 18 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard McElhinney of Texas; and a sister, Peggy (and Red) Wilson of Nebraska.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two grandchildren, Debra and Wayne; her son-in-law, Ken Parnell; a brother and a sister.

Funeral arrangements are under the care of Coffelt Funeral Service of Sandpoint.
