Bulldogs, Wampus Cats make a clean sweep Thursday

SANDPOINT — In his first varsity start of the season, former junior varsity soccer star Kyle Maux, assisted by Tanner Welch, posted a pair of opening half goals to lead Sandpoint to a 4-1 over Lewiston Thursday at Memorial Field.

Adding to Sandpoint's total was Micheal Brewer and Brent Henry, who each punched in penalty kicks in the second half.

As the No. 2 seed heading into next week's Region I Division 4A soccer tournament, the Sandpoint Bulldogs (7-3-1, 11-3-1) will play host to No. 3 Post Falls at Centenial Field at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

GIRLS SOCCER

Sandpoint 1, Lewiston 0

LEWISTON — Accomplishing the goal of an undefeated league season (10-0-2), the Bulldogs edged the Bengals Thursday.

Sandpoint junior Tori Smith picked up the trash off a corner kick and scored an unassisted goal in the 76th minute.

"We open the first part of the game with four or five excellent opportunities," said coach Adam Tajan, however as pressure built to score more and more shot seemed to be forced.

Sandpoint plays Post Falls on Tuesday in the Region I District 4A opener in Sandpoint.

First half — none. Second half — 1, Spt, Tori Smith (unassisted) 76:00.

VOLLEYBALL

Sandpoint d. Post Falls

SANDPOINT — Taking the match in three, the Sandpoint girls volleyball team cruised to a 26-24, 25-19, 25-20 victory over Post Falls Thursday night.

Senior Kelsey James led the Bulldogs with 14 kills and 14 assists, while senior Caitlyn Free finished with 16 digs, nine kills, three aces and two blocks. Senior Amy Bradetich had 20 digs and junior Cody Helander earned 16 digs.

As the No. 2 seed, Sandpoint opens the Region I Division 4A volleyball tournament against Lakeland in Sandpoint on Tuesday. The Bulldogs will finish up the regular season against Lewiston at home on Saturday.

"It is a whole new season next week," said coach Tiwi Nicks.

Clark Fork d. Coeur d'Alene Charter

COEUR d'ALENE — Michelle Haase had 45 digs, eight kills and four aces in Clark Fork's 25-16, 26-24, 25-20 victory over Coeur d'Alene Charter.

Jennifer Gauthier added 29 digs, eight kills and four aces, while Jolene Meredith earned 25 digs and six aces.

Clark Fork (6-6, 14-19) finished tied with Mullan and Lakeside for third place in the league. A coin flip will determine seeding for next week's 1A District 1 tournament, which begins Thursday at Kootenai.

St. Maries d. Priest River

PRIEST RIVER — The St. Maries volleyball wrapped up the Intermountain League championship with a 25-11, 25-12, 25-23 victory over Priest River.

St. Maries won 21 straight IML titles from 1981-2001. Lakeland won the last two league crowns.

Priest River is 3-5, 6-6.

Bonners Ferry d. Kellogg

BONNERS FERRY — The Lady Badgers made a comeback to win in three straight games after losing their first to the Kellogg Wildcats on Thursday, posting scores of 23-25, 25-18, 25-22 and 25-17.

"Each game we play now, we're just going to be a little more consistent and a little more confident," said Bonners Ferry Coach Janis Tucker.

For the Badgers, Poston led with 15 kills and four aces, Jennifer Youngwirth had 33 assists and Becky Lowther had two blocks.
