Savage has needed training, experience

| October 18, 2004 9:00 PM

My gosh one of the sheriff's candidates is a woman! Recently, in a downtown shop I overheard a conversation that a woman couldn't be the sheriff. When I asked why I was told their place is in the home raising kids. Let's see woman are good enough for us to marry, raise our kids, provide medical care and teach our children in school. In fact, wasn't it us men who put then to work in factories while we went off to World War II ? Today women stand along side and command troops, ships, fly aircraft and in fact fill slots in every known occupation.

While being a woman isn't necessarily a qualification to be sheriff. Having the necessary training, experience and administrative experience is. We all know Bonner County and Bonner County government will be going through tremendous growth and change in these coming years. Having a strong administrator for sheriff is very important for the community. I believe Elaine Savage is the right person for this demanding job. Elaine won't have to be trained for the position she has been the undersheriff during the current sheriff's term. I have known Elaine since she was chief of police of Priest River. She has a strong administrative background and a great deal of common sense.
