BOISE — Opening the 4A state boys soccer tournament on a strong note, the Sandpoint Bulldogs pulled off a 2-0 shutout over Burley at the Capital Soccer Complex on Thursday.

"Our back four guys played an almost flawless game today," said Sandpoint coach Randy Thoreson, who gave kudos to Joe Dibble and Kyle Van Dyk for their contributions.

After a scoreless opening half, the Bulldogs finally struck paydirt with an unassisted goal by senior Brent Henry just seconds after the break.

"Brent made a great turn up top and kicked a rocket from about 18-yards out over the keepers head. The guys didn't have a chance," said Thoreson.

In the 72nd minute, junior Micheal Brewer knocked the ball outside to Joe Dibble who sent a perfect ball back to a wide open Henry, who scored the second and final goal of the game.

Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, junior Brandon Eddy received a red card and therefore will have to sit out today's game against Skyview.

"We can't afford to lose anybody and that really hurts us," said Thoreson, who already has a banged up roster. "We are just going to have to reshuffle and see what happens."

Against Skyview, the Bulldogs will face some very talented forwards, who led the Hawks past Wood River 3-1 Thursday.

"Hopefully we can counter those guys and do some damage on the other end," said Thoreson. "Everyone will have to pick it up and fill in the pieces."
