Sandpoint boys advance to the state championship game

BOISE — Ranking up their second shutout of the 4A state boys soccer tournament, the Sandpoint Bulldogs defeated Skyview 2-0 at the Capital Soccer Complex on Friday.

"Once again the back four, Joey Dibble, Anthony Sorentino, Gunner Paulsen and Kyle Van Dyk, played outstanding," said Sandpoint coach Randy Thoreson. "They were just incredible."

The victory advances Sandpoint into championship game against Blackfoot today.

"Today we created so many chances and we had enough momentum that Skyview just couldn't getting anything going," said Thoreson, who is amazed with how the Bulldogs have responded at this year's state tournament. "I have never had a team that has been able to overcome so much adversity. I couldn't be prouder of them."

Senior Brent Henry put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard first with a goal in the 19th minute, assisted by RJ Dixon. Henry then assisted Sheldon Kernodle who scored final goal of the game midway through the second half.

"Brent's been playing great and what a great time to pick up this game," said Thoreson. "He has been putting the ball in the back of the net when we need it."

Blackfoot, which defeated Nampa 3-2 Friday, will be a tough opponent, said Thoreson.

"We can't afford to lose focus for a minute or these guys will be in scoring position," he added. "Technically, they're a real good team and if you don't keep up the intensity for 80 minutes you'll pay a price. But I think the kids are up for it."
