Byway harassment is simply shameful

| September 8, 2004 9:00 PM

What a shame that there are some folks in this area who find it necessary to harass people for voicing their opinion. I commend the business owners, many of whom do not depend on tourists, for voicing their opinion about the highway in the creek. I, for one and I know of many others, as a way of thanks, will continue to support these community-minded businesses.

Oh, and by the way, for 18 years, up to two years ago, I worked on North 4th Avenue. Year-round, I used my lunch hour to run errands, in and out of town, and at least once a week I went to Yoke's to do my grocery shopping. Traffic was never a big problem and I was able to get back to work on time.

I have always marveled at the folks who claim it takes them 20 minutes, or more, in the summer to get through Sandpoint. My memory must be failing, so I thought I would keep track. From mid-July through mid-August, we carried a note pad and started timing at the north end of the bridge to our destination and then again, on the return trip. We went everywhere at all times of the day, every day of the week. We went to Kootenai Cutoff, to highways 2 and 200 and all points in between. Many of these trips were done during the busiest time of the day. Thank goodness, my memory isn't flawed after all. The average time for that whole period was 4.789 minutes either way. Happy driving.
