Sandpoint soccer teams falter

POST FALLS — Guarantees are made all the time in sports, but something in Post Falls soccer coach Gabe Lawson's voice suggests he knows what he's talking about.

"Tonight we really had a chance to win," Lawson said after his team's 3-1 Inland Empire League loss to Sandpoint. "Next time we are going to win."

Ashley Evans put Post Falls up 1-0 in the 42nd minute on a direct kick, and Lawson said it was the first time the Trojans have ever held a lead on Sandpoint.

"It was only the second goal we've ever scored on them, and after that our guys went a little crazy," Lawson said. "Our guys know the history, they knew it was a big thing just to score on these guys. It's right after big goals like that that that your team is the most vulnerable, and Sandpoint took advantage of that.

Two minutes later Brent Henry evened the game for the Bulldogs. Eleven minutes after that Chris Hepperly gave Sandpoint a lead it wouldn't relinquish.

Lawson and the Trojans can make good on his guarantee in Sandpoint on Oct. 2. In the meantime, Sandpoint (3-1, 4-1) plays Boise High School on Friday in Boise.
