Kathryne was born Feb. 15, 1909, in Valley, Wash., the daughter of Phillip and Margaret (Peternell) Klavano.

In 1927, she graduated from Jenkins High School in Chewelah, Wash., and worked for a time in the old Curlew Creamery. She completed her nurse's training in 1928 and worked in the hospital in Colville, Wash. Then, in 1934, she graduated from the Morse School of Beauty in Spokane, Wash.

In 1936, she moved to Sandpoint, Idaho, to work in the Graham Hospital, and it was in Sandpoint that she met her husband, Rolan Ewing, whose father was a longtime mayor of that city.

Kay and Ron lived and worked in a variety of Idaho towns, including Sandpoint, Kellogg and Mullan. From there, they moved to Oregon where they both worked in state offices. The Ewings lived in The Dalles, Salem, Tillamook and Bend, Ore.

Kathryne retired in the late 1960s from the Accident Prevention Division of the Oregon State Workman's Compensation Board. Following Rolan's death in 1995, Kathryne moved to Scappoose, Ore., to live with her nephew, Lyle Wheeler and his wife, Sue.

Numerous nieces, nephews and their children will miss Kathryne and her ability to make people laugh and feel good about life. Family and friends will remember her delicious cooking and her readiness to tell a joke.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Columbia Humane Society, 2024 Oregon St., St. Helens, OR 97051; or to your favorite charity.

Omega Funeral and Cremation Service of Portland, Ore., is in charge of arrangements.
