Dorothy Beeman (Granniss) Barry, 92, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, in Kootenai, Idaho. Services will be held in Shelton, Conn. She will be buried in Shelton. Happy sailing, Dottie.

Let me tell you about our beloved mother. She was born on May 20, 1912, an only child, to Clarence Martin Granniss and Helen Vianna (Beeman) Granniss in Shelton.

Dorothy loved the outdoors. She played with her chickens and cats and followed her dad everywhere. She hiked in the woods, played in the brook and ice skated on the Housatonic River.

In 1932, she married our father, John Paul Barry, also of Shelton. They had two children, a son, Ken; and a daughter, Althea. They added boating, camping and trailering to their list of outdoor pleasures. They traveled the United States and visited most of the national parks. Mom was never employed, but kept busy with her family, her yard, her art and her animals.

In 1961, she moved back to the banks of the Housatonic River, where she had lived most of her life.

In later years, she spent winters in Florida and summers in Connecticut. After Dad died in 1989, she lived full-time with her daughter and son-in-law in Alva, Fla., and Sandpoint, Idaho.

Grandma Dot is survived by a loving family who will miss her greatly. They include her son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Elaine Barry of Newtown, Conn.; grandchildren and families, Debbie and Ron Melycher, Josh and Heather of Prospect, Conn.; Donna and Ken Liberatore, Collin and Kyle of Alpharetta, Ga.; Jeff and Lyn Barry, Krista, Stephanie, Kaitlyn and Alyssa of Naugatuck, Conn.; her daughter and son-in-law, Althea and Bert Brotherton of Sandpoint; grandchildren and families, Lorinda Brotherton and Walter Majors, Matt and Jesse of Juneau, Alaska; Timothy and Susan Brotherton, Dorothy and Stuart of Bowling Green, Ky.; and Jennifer and Victor Brotherton-Manna, Ally and Seneca of Sandpoint.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John; and a grandson, Mark Barry Brotherton.

Arrangements are under the care of Coffelt Funeral Service of Sandpoint.
