Give your energy to schools instead of criticizing them

| April 2, 2005 8:00 PM

This letter is in response to Lawrence Fury's letter (March 29, 2005).

It appears to me that you may have extra time on your hands. Perhaps you could share your writing skills in the local schools. If you already do that, perhaps you could spend time helping to enlist other volunteers to work with students.

Education is the way to get ahead in life. Our district has high numbers of low-income students who cannot afford the "extras," i.e., books and home computers, to enrich their lives. Single and two working parents are not home as much to give personal attention and encouragement to their children. If you can't help fill the gaps during the school day, the Sandpoint Teen Center and the public library have after school programs that need volunteers and mentors. If you can't give time, give money. It will be greatly appreciated.

Mr. Fury, who taught you how to write? Who taught our government leaders, scientists, sports people, entertainers, business people and lawyers? Teachers. And who are some of the most underpaid professionals? Teachers. Would you care to exchange places with one?
