| August 4, 2005 9:00 PM

Leonard E. Zacharias, 94, passed away, Wednesday, July 27, 2005, in Sandpoint, Idaho.

Leonard was born on March 10, 1911, in London, England, to Christian and Lilly Zacharias. In 1920, seven brothers, including the youngest Leonard, moved to Chicago, Ill. Leonard owned a dry cleaning business in Chicago.

He married the adventurous Verneda (Dickie) Heath on Jan. 27, 1935, in Chicago. The couple moved to Seattle in 1940, with their two young sons, where Leonard spent 27 years working for American Linen Supply. He later bought the Ballard Dairy Queen, owning it from 1966 until 1973. Verneda passed away in 1983, and Leonard stayed in Seattle, where his friends and son Terry resided. In 1999, Leonard moved to Sandpoint to be closer to his son Stephen.

Leonard was a member of the Greenwood Masonic Lodge No. 253, F. and A.M., the Shriners, and the Ballard Elks, Lodge No. 827. He was a well-known figure in Ballard, as he walked five miles daily, even into his 80s. He enjoyed following financial news and real estate. He shared his success with his family, and was generous with his grandchildren. He was proud of the fact that he had immigrated and made the American dream work for him.

He is survived by his two sons, Terry (Adrienne) Zacharias of Seattle, Wash., and Stephen (Karen) Zacharias of Sandpoint; five grandchildren, Christopher (Chloe) Zacharias of Everson, Wash., Stephanie (Ed) Dodge of Lake Stevens, Wash., Dion (Amy) Zacharias of Stanwood, Wash., Sile (Eric) Wilson of Gold Bar, Wash., and Sabra Zacharias of London, England; and four great-grandchildren, Rustin Dodge, Kyle and Austin Zacharias, and Roisin Wilson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and six brothers, Carl, Christian, Arthur, Albert, William and George.

Leonard was a man who loved his family and was proud of the successes they enjoyed. We love and miss you, Grandpa.
