Council elections are set for Nov. 8

SANDPOINT — Councilman Francis Ogilvie and councilwomen Cindy Elliott and Allison Burgstahler's four-year city council positions are up for election on Nov. 8.

The first day for candidates to file declaration of candidacy is Friday, Sept.16 at 8 a.m. There are two methods of nomination. A completed, notarized declaration of candidacy shall be accompanied by either:

? 1. A petition of candidacy with no less than five signatures; or

? 2. A petition of candidacy accompanied by a non-refundable filing fee of $40.

Signatures must be certified by the county clerk before the city clerk can officially accept the petition. Candidates may take their petitions to the county clerk for certification before submitting to the city clerk.

Otherwise, the city clerk must submit the petition to the county clerk for certification, creating a time delay of at least two days. Consequently, candidates must consider this delay when deciding when to turn petitions in.

The last day for candidates to file declaration of candidacy is 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30 5 p.m. Persons who miss this deadline have until Oct. 25 to file a Declaration of Intent to run as a write-in candidate.

Idaho Code 50-477 provides that Idaho campaign disclosure statutes apply to elections for mayor and council members in cities over 5,000 population. Candidates are required to file Appointment and Certificate of Political Treasurer form with the Petition of Candidacy.

The political treasurer can be an individual registered to vote or a candidate may serve as his or her own political treasurer. No contribution may be received or expenditure made until a political treasurer has been certified.

Voter registration for this election closes Oct. 15. Persons missing that deadline may register on Nov. 8 when they appear to vote. The city's polling place is City Hall, 1123 Lake St. Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
