County's justice system is failing area residents
Our justice system is in bad shape. How is it that Sig Jensen — a devout and respected educator — can be publicly dragged through the mud on the basis of one accusation? Sig was proven innocent of all charges, yet he'll have to live with the smear on his name, and the debt accrued in defending himself, for a long time. Why did this happen? The county prosecutor's office and the police failed to do their jobs.
Did Detective Corey Coon find any witnesses to corroborate the charges? Not a one. Did he find any physical evidence to incriminate Sig? No, because there wasn't any, and Coon didn't bother to check. Did Coon make up his mind that an arrest would precede an interview? According to the Daily Bee, he did, Sig's attorney was quoted in the Daily Bee as saying, "'You weren't even planning on talking to (interviewing) people until a man was arrested, arraigned and a preliminary hearing was held, isn't that true?' Coon admitted it was …" (Oct. 27, 2005, Daily Bee)
Is this how the police work?
What about County Prosecutor Phil Robinson? Robinson's office should have taken the time to investigate before moving to trial, yet they could come up with nothing against Sig. All this time and money wasted in the persecution of an innocent man, and all that's been accomplished is the tarnishing of Sig's teaching career. Who's to say that this won't happen to anyone else? Sig is a good and honest man, and look what happened to him.
