Women still given short shrift in America

| December 28, 2005 8:00 PM

OK, let's pretend we're in Iraq to establish democracy, not that I believe that for one single second, but let's pretend.

Democracy for who? Certainly not for the women who are murdered by one of their own because family honor is in question.

Why isn't democracy for women in Iraq? The same reason why democracy isn't really for women in America. Oh, I hear your moan, we have so much here, you should be happy. No, we shouldn't and the reason we shouldn't is because the moment we give up trying to earn an equal wage, the minute we give up trying to get reasonably priced, quality childcare, the minute we give up fighting for health care that can be purchased by single mothers making minimum wage, the minute we give up on these things is the minute the men in charge take back whatever they can.

The men in charge want to stay there. The men in charge have used fear, intimidation, tradition and above all else, God, to stay in the place where laws are made in their favor thus perpetuating the inequality. Of course, those same men will tell you discrimination no longer exists. How convenient. Deny something exists, there's no need to change.

How much difference is their between a man who would deny women health care, child care or an equal wage in the name of God or profits and a man who would deny a women her life in the name of honor?
