Cancer Care Challenge has a change in venue
SANDPOINT — The Cancer Care Challenge team announces a last minute change in plans. Due to the unusual weather, the team is canceling the vertical challenge which was scheduled at Schweitzer Mountain on Saturday, Feb. 26. But that doesn't mean there will not be a chance to support the Challenge and have fun while doing so.
"While we appreciate Schweitzer's support we are now moving forward and focusing on bringing the community together for one night on Friday, Feb. 25 at Di Luna's to support our cause," said Jennifer Merwin, co-chair for the Cancer Care Challenge.
Because there will not be the Saturday event, your contribution is critical now more than ever. Participants will all be put into the "Lodge Skier" category and prizes will be given for the top money makers, both individuals and teams.
"We have several prizes and awards that will be given away at Friday's party," said Patty Hutchens, who is co-chair of the Challenge along with Merwin, "with the silent auction continuing to be the highlight of the celebration."
Already, the Challenge team has collected $22,071 in sponsorship money and pledges.
"This community has made a powerful statement in the fact that we have already raised over $22,000," said Hutchens. "Bonner General Hospital has donated over $3000 to become a Platinum Sponsor for this year's event. Also, the Schweitzer Ski Patrol has once again raised over $3000 through a raffle of a kayak and mountain bike."
But the team needs help to reach its goal of $80,000. The Challenge is the primary fundraiser for Community Cancer Services, Sandpoint's non-profit resource and information center for cancer patients and their families.
"CCS has the responsibility to offer to our community, the best and most current information on cancer," said Suzanne Tugman-Engel, the Executive Director for Community Cancer Services. "The diagnosis of cancer no longer means what it did in the 1950s. We need to educate the community on what cancer means, how a diagnosis will impact their family and how they can thrive through the process."
To support this year's Challenge, we invite everyone in the community to come to Di Luna's on Friday, February 25th for a special night. If you are unable to attend, but would like to support the Challenge, please send your tax deductible donation to the Cancer Care Challenge at P.O. Box 2213, Sandpoint, Idaho 83864. Your name and donation will be acknowledged in the Bonner County Daily Bee.
