Bulldogs, Badgers open strong at state tournament
NAMPA — Out of 15 wrestlers, Sandpoint had seven win their opening round matches during the 4A State Wrestling Tournament at The Idaho Center Thursday.
Earning early victories for Sandpoint were sophomore Joey Fio at 119 pounds, junior Alex Watson (130), senior Gale Belgarde (130), sophomore Taylor Morris (160), sophomore Tyler Lichty (171), senior Joe Heil (189) and junior Sheldon Cramer (215).
After first round defeats, Sandpoint had six guys battle back with wins in the consolation bracket to help the Bulldogs finished the day in second place overall. Consolation round winners were freshman Tim Pepperdine (103), sophomore Alec Ward (112), junior Chad Spade (125), senior Cody Kritzeck (135) sophomore Kyle Meschko (140) and junior Tyler Cramer (275).
In 3A state action, Bonners Ferry won nine out of 13 first round matches Thursday to move into third place in the overall standings. The Badgers had victories by sophomore David Hayes (130), sophomore Ken Swift (140), junior Adam Hall (145), senior Ken Koehler (152), senior Jacob Stonehocker (152), senior Derrell Davis (160), senior Travis Stolley (171), junior Don Dinning (189) and junior Ben Turner (215).
Priest River suffered five opening round defeats, however two Spartans did win their opening round matches. They were senior Ryan Miller (145) and junior Mike Ramsey (171).
