COEUR d'ALENE — Lake City didn't do itself any favors, shooting just 10 of 22 from the free-throw line, but the Timberwolves held off a late run to beat Sandpoint to start the new year off with a big Inland Empire League victory.

Ben Widmyer led Lake City (2-2 IEL, 7-4) with 22 points and Ty Stoddard finished with 11. Sandpoint (1-1, 6-4) countered with 19 from Ben Mitchell and Anthony Sorentino cashed in for 10.

"It was a great game. We had it up to as many as 11 and Sandpoint cut it to four after three quarters," Lake City coach Kris Knowles. "The kids did what needed to be done. The holiday tournament in Central Washington Tournament during the break did a world of good for our confidence."

The Timberwolves expanded a one-point lead into a 31-25 lead at the half, but the Bulldogs outscored Lake City 19-14 to cut into the lead.

Lake City hosts Coeur d'Alene Friday.
